What are organic coffee beans? Why are such classified as organic? How are they made? From what are they made from? There are so many question regarding coffee beans. Let’s find out some of the answers through its history and current events.

Organic foods are produced using traditional methods. It does not use modern farming and planting methods. It does not use pesticides, chemical fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, industrial solvents, and chemical food additives. As such, organic coffee beans are produced the same way.

When humans started to learn how to farm, agriculture was simply organic. It was only during the 20th century when new synthetic chemicals were introduced in the processing of food cultivation. In the 1940s however, the organic farming movement arose in response to the Green Revolution – the industrialization of agriculture.

Today, production of organic food is a seriously regulated industry. In theUnited States, together with the European Union,Canada,Japanand many other countries, producers are required to obtain a special certification to market their produce as organic. Part of the context of the regulations in these countries define organic food as food that are produced using methods that comply with organic standards that are set by national governments and international organizations.

Because of the regulations surrounding organic food, many speculations are arising and claiming that organic food are better for the health compared to non-organically produced food. However, available scientific evidence are not enough to prove that there is a significant difference between organic and non-organic food in terms of taste, safety, or even its nutritional value.

Despite this, the debate continues especially for coffee lovers all around the world. They all say that organic coffee beans are the best. Is it?

According to many expert coffee producers, it is important to maintain the habitat where coffee is grown, so they can produce the best quality coffee. A good habitat is essential to allow the coffee plant to obtain all the nutrients it need. Fertilizers and pesticides, though they help in the process, reduce soil fertility, which greatly affects the development of the coffee beans. Not only that, these chemical additives causes unpredictable side effects on humans, animals, and even in the environment.

Organically produced coffee beans are the next best thing for coffee and environmental lovers alike as well. Because of the intensive regulations implemented in countries active in the organic farming movement (as mentioned above), organic coffee is produced involving recycling, soil health, composting, and most specially, protection of the environment. These are crucial for organic producers to maintain aspects of sustainability. It also allows them to be socially responsible.

Moreover, organic coffee is safe for the environment because it does not contain chemical additives, which can harm the environment. Therefore, for healthier and safer purposes, organic coffee beans are the best choice.

Sad though that sustainability issues continue to rattle the coffee industry today. Other important social policy issues such as fair trade, bird-friendly coffee, and organic shade grown coffee contribute to these problems as well. As a result, quality and cost of coffee are greatly affected.
